SPUC President
I hope this edition of our Spring/Summer newsletter finds you well and enjoying beautiful weather. Here’s what we’ve been up to at SPUC:
We are busy preparing for our 5th annual fall conference which will be held in Fort Worth, TX this September. SPUC is fortunate to have partnered with Cook Children’s Medical Center for the 2019 conference. Cook Children’s is one of the largest freestanding pediatric medical centers in the U.S. Administrators and staff members at Cook Children’s have been instrumental in planning all aspects ot the conference. I look forward to seeing you there in September.
A recent study revealed that urgent care centers have a high rate of inappropriate antibiotic prescribing. Inappropriate antibiotic use not only contributes to antibiotic resistance but also places patients at risk for adverse drug reactions and drug side effects.
OUCH 2018 is coming! A personalized email link will be sent after the July 4th holiday. If your site does not receive an invite, email [email protected] for a survey.
SPUC members Tiffany Addington, Jennifer Johnson, Amanda Montalbano and Emily Montgomery wrote a response to an article in Pediatric Emergency Care.
The article was called “Pediatric Referrals to an Emergency Department From Urgent Care Centers.” Read the published response letter here.
The bill would, among other actions, establish licensing requirements, give the New Jersey Commissioner of Health authority to establish requirements and standards for Urgent Care clinics, and -- of particular interest to SPUC -- would prohibit treatment of children younger than 18 in Urgent Care facilities, “except in emergent circumstances.”
SPUC lost a loyal friend when Mike Moran passed away in March. Dr. Moran was a founding father of SPUC, serving on the board and Program Committee for five years.
Plans are moving forward towards a summer opening of Ireland’s first pediatric urgent care center.
SPUC member Corey Fish, MD is taking the pediatric urgent care experience into the world of digital healthcare.
