Plans are moving forward toward a summer opening of Ireland’s first pediatric urgent care center. You may recall previous SPUC features on plans and construction for two satellite centers to the new national children’s hospital, and Dr. Ciara Martin, whom we met at SPUC’s Annual Conference in Seattle in the fall of 2017. SPUC Past-President Margaret Orcutt-Tuddenham recently gave a keynote speech at Children’s Health Ireland’s Clinical Intigration Symposium, and provided an update for us on the progress being made.
Children’s Health Ireland (CHI) invited me to be their morning keynote speaker for their Clinical Integration Symposium. CHI is opening their first pediatric urgent care this summer and I addressed the history and value of pediatric urgent care. The symposium was held at the Royal College of Physicians in Dublin, the kind of historical venue that can only bring import to any topic.

About 150 physicians, nurses and administrators were in attendance. The questions after the presentation were thoughtful and (from my perspective) the lecture was well received. Ireland is in the process of integrating all pediatric clinical services and is building a fabulous pediatric hospital in central Dublin. The pediatric urgent care opening this summer is the first of two, both around Dublin. Perhaps their success will lead to wider geographic placement in the future. In the meantime, they are in need of general pediatricians!
Dr. Ciara Martin, a SPUC member and Medical Director for the PUC would be happy to talk to anyone interested in relocating! Contact me at [email protected] for her contact information.
We added some touring onto the trip and fell in love with the beauty of the country and the friendliness and genuine warmth of the people.
The second site will be on the grounds of Dr. Martin’s hospital in Tallaght, with its emergency department closing to become an urgent care center. We plan follow-up communications and reports from Ireland.
