We have made it to 2021!
While many of us were anxious to leave 2020 behind, I wanted to reflect on some silver linings and positive change driven by the global pandemic.
Telemedicine utilization accelerated at light speed, being adopted by providers and patients alike. We have witnessed science being challenged, and we have watched it prevail. We have seen global collaboration for the development and distribution of vaccines to the world.
Fewer illnesses and injuries for children - this is a big win. Driven by social distancing, greater attention to hand hygiene and stay at home orders, we have seen decrease in our most common diagnoses of URI, otitis media, and injuries. While we have felt this impact with a change in volumes, many of our practices have demonstrated their resilience by expanding scope of practice or becoming more involved in our local communities.
SPUC has also demonstrated resilience. We have continued to offer CME with our Weekly Webinar Series. Our Annual Conference Committee pivoted from an in-person to a very successful virtual conference - bringing the same rate of attendance as in years past. This speaks to our ongoing commitment to providing education, research platforms and networking opportunities.
The last year has brought significant change to our daily lives and how we practice medicine. Some of these changes will have a lasting impact, especially in pediatric mental health. By remaining committed to the health and welfare of children, urgent care will continue to have positive impacts in the pediatric community.
