The American Academy of Pediatrics welcomed the inaugural meeting of the Provisional Section on Urgent Care Medicine at the 2019 AAP National Convention and Exhibition (AAP NCE) in New Orleans this past October.
SOCUM began in 2015 as a subcommittee within the Section of Emergency Medicine and leadership quickly discovered the need for expansion and growth into a separate section within the AAP. It already has over 200 members, 30 of which were able to be present in New Orleans.
During the meeting, AAP leadership spoke on their support of the development of this new section. Members also heard from AAP Member Engagement and Marketing regarding member benefits and value within the Academy and from the Committee on Continuing Medical Education on resources available for learner engagement and CME opportunities. SOCUM will offer a half day educational program at AAP NCE 2021 in Philadelphia.
Provisional status will continue for the next two years at which time the AAP Board of Directors will determine of the official status within the AAP.
